I will be living and working in Washington D.C. this summer!

Last Friday I received my Official Letter of Employment from the Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement. As my first day May 23rd draws nearer and nearer I am getting excited, all the while finding that there is more and more to do.

Today, I found housing and booked my train ticket with Amtrak. I will be departing from Cincinnati at 3:27 a.m. and arriving in Washington D.C. a mere 14hours and 39 mins later, at 6:06 p.m. From there I have to rush to George Washington University on the Metro Bus to claim my room before 8 p.m. My room is in Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis hall, named after the wife of President John F. Kennedy. Needless to say, I am a little nervous, but being a little nervous and succeeding are all part of growing up.

I have such a positive outlook on what this internship will bring me. I anticipate learning many new things and a lot about myself. This will be my first time in D.C. so I am chomping at the bit to see every monument and museum during my stay. I have never lived in a large metropolis before so living in such a dense area and traveling from place to place should be quite interesting. I will be living at George Washington University and I expect to learn a lot from my peers about the city and the opportunity it and other parts of the country hold for people my age. Finally, I know that I will be discerning a lot about my future career: Will I like a 9-5 job? Will I like living and working in the city? Do I want to be involved with schools at the federal level? Do I want to work in policy? Can learn from my supervisors so that one day I might be in their positions?
